Zapatistas. The Zapatista Army of National Liberation, often referred to as the Zapatistas, is a far-left political and militant group that controls a substantial amount of territory in Chiapas, the southernmost state of Mexico. In art, indigenous symbols and traditional garments are used to highlight the movement's focus on the rights and sovereignty of indigenous communities. Artists frequently incorporate visual references to Mayan heritage, using elements like woven textiles, sacred geometry, and natural motifs. These images emphasize the Zapatistas' connection to the land and their fight against the erosion of indigenous culture and autonomy. The roots of the Zapatista movement can be traced back to the Mexican Revolution of 1910-1920. Emiliano Zapata, a key figure in the revolution, led a peasant revolt focused on land reform and social justice. His ideas and legacy have been influential in shaping the ideology of the modern-day Zapatistas. Thee contemporary Zapatista movement, led by the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN), emerged in the 1990s. The EZLN, founded in 1983, is a revolutionary group that advocates for the rights of indigenous communities in Chiapas, Mexico. They rose to prominence in 1994, when they launched an armed uprising against the Mexican government to protest neoliberal economic policies that they believed would further marginalize indigenous communities. The Zapatistas have become a symbol of resistance and indigenous rights, inspiring social movements around the world. Their unique blend of armed struggle, political activism, and cultural expression has made them a significant force in Mexican politics and a global icon of resistance. The EZLN emerged during the government of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, which at the time had ruled Mexico for more than sixty years, in a dominant-party system. The situation led many young people to consider the legal channels of political participation closed and to bet on the formation of clandestine armed organizations to seek the overthrow of a regime that from their point of view was authoritarian, and thus improve the living conditions of the population. One of these organizations, was known as the National Liberation Forces.
