Edmund Coates. Edmund Coates was a landscape, portrait, marine, and historical painter active in New York City from 1837 to 1871.
His painting Playing Lacrosse on the Ice is held by the Yale Art Gsllry and his Cornwall Landing, Hudson River is at the Addison Gallery. Coates' Seascape with Lighthouse sold for $18,800 Sotheby's in 2004.
His work features landscapes inspired by Canada and Italy, although it remains unclear whether he traveled to these locations or drew inspiration from other sources. He also painted in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and is recognized as a member of the Hudson River School, creating numerous scenes of the Hudson River Valley, including Shipping on the Hudson River.
One of his notable works, Washington’s Headquarters at Newburgh, captures the historical significance of George Washington’s headquarters set against Storm Mountain near Newburgh. Coates' works are held in various collections, including the New-York Historical Society, the New York State Historical Association, the Shelburne Museum, Yale University Art Gallery, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
