Geervliet. Geervliet is a place in the Dutch province of South Holland, in the current municipality of Nissewaard south of the Rotterdam Botlek area, on the island of Putten, today part of Voorne-Putten. The number of inhabitants is 1,620. Geervliet used to be a city. The oldest mention of Geervliet dates from 1179, after the royal toll established there on the Bernisse, which was handed over to Count Floris III of Holland that year. In 1381 Geervliet was granted city rights by Zweder van Abcoude. In the Middle Ages, Geervliet was protected by city walls, but later it was largely destroyed by a fire. However, the old center can still be visited. There is also the Bernisse Molen, also a former restaurant, built on a former defense tower that was part of the city wall. The recordings were made in Geervliet for the NCRV film De Zomer van 1945 and the AVROTROS series Flikken Rotterdam. The municipality of Geervliet, which was established on January 1, 1812, was dissolved on January 1, 1980. Geervliet then became part of the newly established municipality of Bernisse. Bernisse and Spijkenisse merged into the newly established municipality of Nissewaard on January 1, 2015.
