Francesco del Tadda. Francesco Ferrucci known as del Tadda was an Italian sculptor.
Active in Florence, especially in the context of commissions for Cosimo. In addition to Tuscany, he also worked in Rome, where he was at the time of the sack of 1527.
He belonged to a family of master stonemasons and sculptors from Fiesole documented from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century. He developed the techniques to be able to sculpt semi-precious stones, rediscovering the art of porphyry, carving and specializing in works in this bare material.
This primacy was recognized by both Vasari and Cellini and it seems that his competence derived from the development of particularly hard metal tools, thanks to a particular hardening. The development of these particular techniques and tools and the interest of the various Grand Dukes lead to the development of the Florentine school of inlay and the foundation of the Opificio delle Pietre Dure.
His best known work is the statue of Justice placed on the column raised in Piazza Santa Trinita. His business was carried on by his son and collaborator Romolo Ferrucci del Tadda and by other members of the family, such as the other son Giovanbattista Ferrucci and his nephew Matteo Ferrucci, also known for their particular expertise in the processing of porphyry and other stones, particularly hard. His tomb, whose tombstone he personally sculpted, is located in the Church
