Doetechum / Doetecum Brothers (c1520 - c1600). Joannes van Doetecum the Elder, also known as Joannes van Doetecum, was a Dutch engraver and cartographer. He is known for his etchings inspired by works after genre scenes by Pieter Bruegel the Elder and for his maps of various Dutch cities. His name is also written as Duetecum, Van Doetechum, Van Deutecom, Van Duettekom or A Dotecom. His first name sometimes as Johannes, Johannis, Johan, Joan or Jan. Joannes van Doetecum was a son of the glazier Jan van Doetecum, also called Ter Heghe, and his wife Aeltken. In his younger years he was a glazier like his father, but the business in the Engestraat was continued by his brother Bartholt. Joannes moved to Haarlem in 1578. With his brother Lucas van Doetecum he collaborated on many series of prints. He married Hilleken Derricksen in 1551 in Deventer. Some of his sons were also well-known graphic artists: Baptista Doetecum, cartographer, copper engraver, etcher, publisher, bookseller, typographer, illuminator; Joannes van Doetecum II, printmaker, cartographer, copper engraver, etcher, publisher and Peter van Doetecum, glass painter.
