Son of Francisco Antonio Meléndez. He was taken to Madrid as a child when his parents returned from Naples. His first teacher was his father, whom he assisted in the painting of miniature portraits. He moved to larger-scale oil portraiture when he became an assistant to Louis Michel van Loo, court painter to Philip V.
