Yu Fei'an was a well-known and very conservative Beijing painter of birds and flowers with a passion for pigeons, which he trained and wrote a book about. He started to paint in the gongbi style around 1935. His southern counterpart would be Chen Zhifo in Nanjing, who had studied design in Tokyo from 1919 to 1923.
