Benjamin Cuyp was a member of the famous dynasty of Dordrecht painters, he studied under his brother Jacob Cuyp (1612 - 1652) and entered the Guild of St Luke in Dordrecht in 1631. Cuyp was greatly influenced by both Rembrandt and Adriaen Brouwer from an early point in his career. Houbraken stated that he studied with his half-brother Jacob.
